Oval Countertop Height Weston Pedestal Table

We recently delivered a kitchen set to a dear friend of Rustic Trades. Before ordering they envisioned a countertop oval Weston Pedestal with two benches. We delivered and soon after she was flagging down her neighbors and telling them they HAD to see her NEW TABLE! Such fun!

Here it is!

Introducing The Weston Triple Pedestal

We have kicked around the idea of designing a round pedestal table with three legs. Why not start with our Weston Design and go crazy? Well, here it is: The Weston Triple Pedestal.

The first concept started as a sketch that was sent over to a good friend of ours. The sketch consisted of several layout options that we eventually narrowed down to base design where the legs met a centered joint. Due to the nature of the angle of the cut and the thickness of the timbers we use, that joint, as it turns out, was the largest hurdle to overcome by our craftsman. But, we have two very creative master craftsman, John Michael and Graham Simmons, who were up to the challenge and made it happen.

When the table was finally constructed and assembled, everyone at the shop stopped to admire the beautiful artisanship of our team. We were excited (and relieved) that the project resulted in such a success. As I looked around I realized the importance of the piece we crafted. This table, built by hand, intentionally with the utmost care for detail and quality will remain with the intended family from generation to generation. I envisioned each season of their life moving by like a blur, dinning, parties, family meetings, date nights, grand babies, new home....  yet the table stands firm in the center. Its not just a piece of furniture and its not just temporary. It is timeless and it should be made with that in mind.

Life is truly celebrated around the table. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of it.

Rustic Trades is coming to Colorado!

At Rustic Trades, we are believers in the beauty of breaking bread together. There's something extremely special about the communal table where relationships are bonded, stories are shared and memories are made. We imagine after a long day of skiing in the snow covered hills of Breckenridge or Aspen, there would be no better way to unwind with friends or family than gathered around one of our tables, recounting the day and making plans for a return trip.

That's why, we are thrilled to announce the opening of our second location in Colorado Springs, Colorado! We anticipate the shop will be open by early spring to serve the Denver area and neighboring cities, all across to the West Coast. Having a second production facility means we can provide extra special care and attention to all of our RT friends from Nebraska to Texas and Oregon, and anywhere in between.

Our Colorado Springs shop will soon be outfitted with lots of brand new, shiny equipment, but it will be filled with talent as seasoned and tenacious as our aged white oak.

Ross will serve as operator and master craftsman of the Colorado production site, overseeing every single piece that is crafted by our artisans to ensure the quality matches the standard we pride ourselves on. Ross has been with Rustic Trades since it's inception, often spending late nights working out of his garage in the early days, before eventually growing and supervising the Atlanta location. He'll be no stranger to Colorado though. As a rock climber, alpinist, mountain biker, and kayaking extraordinaire, he has spent much of his time exploring Buena Vista, Estes Park, Fort Collins and other areas along The Front Range.

It's not unusual to find John Michael following Ross down a river or cliff line, but more importantly, he'll now be following Ross to Colorado as a lead craftsmen. He originally joined the Rustic Trades team in 2014, quickly honing his skills and excelling in his work. He pays close attention to small details and the thoughtfulness shows in his quality craftsmanship. We imagine John Michael will be living out of a Sprinter van before too long, traveling between Boulder and Colorado Springs to pursue his passions for both the outdoors and woodworking.

Of course, we cant send these two guys off without someone to keep an eye on them. Rebecca will be connecting one-on-one with each customer to consult them in the design process and make certain their personalized selections are accomplished in each piece of handmade furniture. Rebecca has been drawn to the mountains since her college summers working for the Summit Resort Hotel in Big Sky, Montana, but it was a backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park that sealed the deal. She made the decision over an espresso in Georgetown to go back to the high country for good, and now the opportunity awaits her with open arms.

We can't thank our loyal customers enough for your dedication to our craft. It is with your admiration and demand for local, reclaimed furniture that our growth is possible. We look forward to our expansion and the exiting opportunities that await.  Most of all, we are anxious to share our journey with you along the way!

Your Life...Well Spent

I am constantly reminded why we focus on building these amazing tables. I am reading a book, "A life well spent" and had to share the authors experience after visiting the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. He writes:

"This house was built by the Vanderbilts of railroad-industry fame and fortune in the mid-1800s. What caught my attention as we went on a tour were the large eating rooms with adjoining sitting areas. Much emphasis was placed on mealtime in those days, and it wasn't uncommon for each meal to last two hours. So much of the space in the house was allocated to the dining rooms and breakfast areas because the family spent a lot of time there in conversation and dialogue--before, during and after the meal. It was during these conversations that values and training of the next generation took place.

What a contrast to the typical American family today--ours included."

At Rustic Trades, we value what happens around our dining table. It's for "family" these heirloom pieces are built, and there's a reason we want them to last generations. We desire for strong values to be built to last, and for hopes and dreams to be deeply instilled and fulfilled. It's about family, those "like" family -- and all those who are invited to sit at your dining table.

We may be able to master the art of woodworking over time -- it takes practice, but not without a conscious effort. Same goes for those important conversations and dialogue; it would be hard to master the quality of TIME...without a lot of practice.

We hope your Rustic Trades dining table is a place where you can spend many hours!

A Personalized, Metal Base Conference Table

We seem to never be surprised by the truly unique ideas our customers dream up for their particular space. This next custom order was brought to us by a rather creative company, who solely make it their mission to go 'above and beyond' just the ordinary. Wits' End Productions is accustomed to adding flare and excitement in everything they do...even when it comes to needing a conference table.

At Rustic Trades, we enjoy trying new things. This time, by "new" we mean:

  • building a table on a metal base, not a solid wood base;
  • using a solid white oak slab top without our typical rustic, rough knots (making it a smoother surface for better functionality and writing);
  • and personalizing a table by branding it with the company logo.

They say there is a first for everything, and this order was no exception. Wits' End Productions provided us with their vision, and together we discussed how to make the natural feel of oak fit right into their high-tech environment.

Time was also of the essence; this was the very first table to leave our new shop!

We were happy to deliver just in time for this special occasion:
"We are very fortunate to have a wonderfully creative and loyal client for many years. Even though we have done work for them for years, they have not had the opportunity to visit our office. We wanted to make a statement when they walked into our conference room, so we added the comfort of oak with the high-tech look of a magnetic glass blackboard. They loved the look, the uniqueness, and the comfortable ambiance the table added to the space." - Hallie, Wits' End Productions

…and that's how we put the word "custom" in customer.

It was a pleasure to work with the creative WITS' team!

A Table in Serenbe

The name "Serenbe" (pronounced Seh-Rin-Bee) might cause you to raise an eyebrow, but in an odd way...also inspire a sense of living...without a care in the world.

At least that's what it does for us. Or...it could simply be the New South Food Co. blog post by guest blogger, Eliza, that swept us away into this idyllic little community just south of Atlanta.

It is obvious this little town of Serenbe is trying to sustain the best of quality living. A quick read of their development plan notes a real focus of "community living for multiple generations."

We love the idea of a simpler way of life and like meeting people who share our same value: creating things that last "multiple generations."

I guess you just never know what's outside your back door.

Eliza writes about her love of Serenbe and deciding to make a home here. She reached out to us to help complete that rustic appeal for her farmhouse, and her house is now home to several Rustic Trades barn doors and a round Jameson table, all in our slate grey finish.

You won't' want to miss the mouthwatering recipe for Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble she shares, either!

As if having our table and barn doors featured in a blog wasn't enough…

Take a trip to Serenbe.

Bake up some Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble.

And maybe you, too, will be enjoying life at a table that will last multiple generations.

Thank you for sharing, Eliza!

(P.S. Eliza's home can be rented for getaways and long term stays in Serenbe. Scroll to the home "Lake Haven" to see more.)
